리나갤러리는 오는 4월 23일부터 7월 31일까지 리나갤러리 부산점에서 이재효의 개인전 ‘Lee Jae-Hyo’를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2008년 리나갤러리 서울에서의 전시 이후 17년 만에 이루어지는 작가의 첫 개인전으로, 구작과 신작, 드로잉 작업을 포함한 총 18점의 작품을 선보인다. 1층에서는 나무를 재료로 한 작품들을, 2층에서는 못과 스테인리스를 활용한 작업들을 만날 수 있다.
드로잉에서부터 자연의 산물을 조형적으로 재현하는 설치미술에 이르기까지 이재효의 작업은 예술로 구현된 자연의 변용을 다층적으로 보여준다. 작가가 주로 사용하는 돌, 나무, 못, 낙엽과 같은 우리 곁에서 흔하게 볼 수 있는 익숙한 자연물들은 그의 손을 거쳐 또 다른 생명으로 재탄생한다. 특히, 나무의 속살이 그대로 드러나며 구의 형태를 이루는 작업은 이재효의 대표적인 표현방식 중 하나로, 그의 조형 언어를 상징적으로 드러낸다.
그의 작업은 눈 앞의 재료를 있는 그대로 마주하는 것에서 출발한다. 재료가 지닌 본연의 특성을 존중하며, 감각에 따라 나무에 구멍을 뚫고, 불에 그을리고, 못을 박고, 그라인더로 갈아내는 등의 행위를 반복하면서 재료에 가장 적합한 형태를 찾아간다. 이러한 자유로운 접근은 결과적으로 작가의 의도가 아닌 재료의 이야기를 전달하고자 하는 태도로 이어진다. 그가 자주 사용하는 ‘구’의 형태 역시, 특정한 형상이 아닌 익숙하고 친근한 모양을 통해 오롯이 재료 자체에 집중하게 만들기 위한 선택이다.
작가의 작업노트에는 ‘돌을 보기를 황금같이 해라’라는 문장이 담겨있다. 이는 흔하고 볼품없는 것들, 혹은 쓸모를 다한 것들에 새로운 생명을 부여하는 이재효 작가의 여정을 단적으로 보여주는 말인듯하다. 그는 오늘도 누구나 알고 있는 평범한 재료를 자신만의 방식으로 표현해내며, 자연과 인공의 경계를 넘나들며 조형의 영역을 확장해 나가고 있다.

Lina Gallery is pleased to present Lee Jae-Hyo, a solo exhibition by the artist, on view at Lina Gallery Busan from April 23 through July 31, 2025. This marks Lee’s first solo exhibition in 17 years since his last at Lina Gallery Seoul in 2008. The exhibition features 18 works, including both earlier and recent pieces, as well as a selection of drawings. On the first floor, visitors will encounter works primarily using wood, while the second floor showcases pieces made with nails and stainless steel.
From drawings to large-scale sculptural installations that reinterpret natural forms, Lee Jae-Hyo’s practice reveals the layered transformation of nature into art. Using familiar materials such as stone, wood, nails, and fallen leaves—things we often overlook—he gives new life to what is seemingly ordinary. His spherical wooden sculptures, exposing the raw textures of the material, are among his most iconic, encapsulating the essence of his sculptural language.
His work begins with an encounter—with the material as it is. Respecting its inherent qualities, he intuitively pierces, scorches, hammers, and grinds, seeking the most fitting form for each material. This organic and tactile approach reflects his desire to let the material speak for itself, rather than impose his own narrative. The recurring spherical form in his wooden sculptures is not a representation of a particular concept, but a familiar and neutral shape that draws attention to the essence of the material itself.
In the artist’s notes, he once wrote, “See stones as if they were gold.” This phrase encapsulates Lee’s philosophy of gathering the discarded and the overlooked, and breathing new life into them. By working with modest, everyday materials, he crosses the boundary between nature and artifice, expanding the scope of contemporary sculpture.//리나 갤러리//
